In the little-known, but fascinating region of Puglia in the southern region of Italy, the town of Alberobello is charming and peculiar; it’s hard to believe you’re really in Italy, or Europe, or even the planet Earth.
I remember the first time my husband and I visited this unique town with its conical whitewashed trulli houses (derived from the Greek word ‘trullo’ meaning dome or cupola). Strolling through the town that contains more than 1,500 of these beehive structures dating back to the 14th century, we felt as though we were living in the pages of a fairytale.
The whimsical homes were originally built by local farmers and peasants using limestone rocks gathered from nearby fields. The conical shape of the roofs served practical purposes such as stability and weather resistance in the region’s hot summers and cold winters. Today, the trulli are used as homes, stores, and storage spaces. Even the local church of St. Anthony (Sant’ Antonio) was constructed in the form of a trullo.
In 1996, Alberobello was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its exceptional cultural significance and the unique architecture of its trulli district.
I always said that when I returned to Alberobello, I wanted to stay in one of these unique houses. The good news for travelers is that we can.
Here are quirky, fun places where you can feel a part of your own personal fairy tale. After all, you have to say you did it and have the photos to prove it!
Three-Bedroom, Two-Bath Trullo

This charming historic home located on a picturesque property is great for a family or group of friends as it can accommodate up to seven guests. One bedroom offers a queen, the second a twin and queen bed, and the third, a king.
Outdoors, guests will find a large garden, a lighted pathway, an umbrella table and chairs, a barbeque and an outdoor kitchen and sink.
Villa Francisca with Private Swimming Pool
If you’re looking for a smaller and more private trullo for two, this one is ideal as it’s a one-bedroom, one-bath vacation home.
In this magical countryside trullo surrounded by lush foliage and olive trees, guests can relax on the large terrace located at the top of a staircase or take a dip in the private swimming pool. The double bedroom can be reached by a spiral staircase as you head up for a night of peaceful slumber.
Trullo al Vicoletto
This newly renovated home in a delightful closed alley is mere steps from the center of Alberobello. The three-bedroom trullo can sleep up to five guests and sports a wooden mezzanine and alcove along with a large living area with a fireplace.
The unique stay experience is complete with a private and peaceful garden to enjoy your morning cappuccino or glass of wine at sunset.
Il Trullo dei Sogni (The Trullo of Dreams)
Dreamy, romantic and stunningly unique, this one-bedroom, one-bath property that sleeps four is just 50 meters from the Rione Monti, a world heritage site and tourist area.
The trullo sports four alcoves and a central hall with an entrance. A mezzanine is accessible by an iron staircase. You have to see the inside of this place to believe it!
Suite Domangi (Trulli Antonio)
Another quaint and lovely place, Suite Domangi is a one-bedroom, one-bath trulli designed for two guests.
Located in the heart of Alberobello’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, the property has a large garden with outdoor seating and a bubbling, warm Jacuzzi tub.
Trullo Vicolo Fiorito
This one-bedroom, one-bath home can accommodate up to five guests when you consider the addition of two living area sofa beds, and the home sports three conical roofs.
The trullo is beautifully decorated and guests will love the outdoor courtyard with outdoor dining and a myriad of colorful plants all around the home.
Countryside Coreggia

Staying at this magnificent property in a small countryside village just three kilometers from Alberobello is like living in the pages of a luxury fairytale.
Recently renovated back to its glory, the three-bedroom, three-bath trullo can sleep up to six guests. The interior is gorgeous and includes a fireplace, and the outside is just as impressive. You’ll find a panoramic roof terrace and at ground level, an outside dining area with a barbeque. The large pool offers a hydromassage feature with loungers, umbrellas and an outdoor shower.
Olive, pomegranate and cherry trees surround the property and we absolutely love the Zen feel of the onsite pond.
Trulli Koré Surrounded by Olive Trees
The price of this historic trullo is an exceptional value given that it’s a two-bedroom and large one-bath villa that can sleep four. Perched above the village of Alberobello, the home is surrounded by olive groves and nature. Hiking trails can be accessed directly from the property. Guests will love the garden area and patio as well as a solarium with sun loungers and umbrellas.
American author Debra Levinson once said, “One of the greatest joys of traveling through Italy is discovering firsthand that it is, indeed, a dream destination.”
And this definitely describes the whimsical magic found in the historic town of Alberobello.
