Europe is home to a myriad of enchanting towns seemingly plucked straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Nestled among lush landscapes and ancient castles, these towns boast charming cobblestone streets, whimsical architecture and a vibrant local culture.
These fairy tale towns with their unique blend of history and natural beauty evoke a sense of wonder that continues to inspire travelers around the world.
When I travel with family and friends, it’s so exciting to stroll through a medieval marketplace or take a scenic hike along coastal cliffs, each destination telling a story and inviting visitors to step into a world where magic feels just around the corner.
Here are some of my favorite places in Europe to get lost in the pages of a fairy tale.
Hallstat, Austria

This breathtaking village situated between the Hallstätter See and the towering Dachstein mountains is renowned for its picturesque scenery. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site for its medieval architecture and role as the birthplace of the Celtic culture, this idyllic hamlet is often described as one of the most beautiful villages in the world.
With its charming wooden houses, many dating back to the 16th century, and narrow streets lined with shops and cafes, Hallstatt exudes an old-world charm that feels timeless.
Triberg, Germany
Triberg is located inside the Black Forest, known for its waterfalls, among the highest in Germany, and its cuckoo clocks, reflecting the region’s rich craftsmanship and Black Forest culture.
A visit here should take advantage of gorgeous hikes through the lush, dense forested regions that inspired the Brothers Grimm’s tales like Hansel and Gretel and Little Red Riding Hood.
Colmar, France

Located in the Alsace region of northeastern France, Colmar is known for its well-preserved medieval architecture and vibrant colors, charming half-timbered houses. and narrow cobblestone streets.
Founded in the 9th century, Colmar has been referred to as Little Venice with its canals lined with colorful houses. My husband said on our last visit here that he expected to see Belle from Beauty and the Beast coming around a corner with a book and market basket in hand.
Castle Combe, England
This sleepy hamlet located on the southern tip of the Cotswolds in an absolute treasure. It features charming stone cottages, a quaint market square, and stunning countryside views.
Castle Combe has a rich history dating back to the medieval period with highlights including St. Andrews Church and the remains of a 14th-century castle. The village has been used as a filming location for a variety of movies and television shows.
Reine, Norway
A small fishing village in the Lofoten archipelago, Reine is surrounded by dramatic landscapes that include towering mountains, deep fjords, and crystal-clear waters.
The vibrant red and white fisherman’s cabins (known as rorbuer) stand in stark contrast to the rugged, natural beauty of the area creating a scene that appears from the pages of a fairy tale novel – especially in the midnight sun in the summer and Northern Lights in winter.
Alberobello, Italy
This town of unique trulli-traditional limestone houses with conical roofs that date back to the 14th century give it a magical folk tale appearance. Many first-time visitors called them “Smurf” houses.
Located in the Puglia region of southern Italy, Alberobello is charming and peculiar, the whimsical village designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996. It’s a quirky, fun place my family fell in love with.
Rothenburg ob der Tauber, Germany

Rothenburg is one of Germany’s most preserved medieval towns. With its half-timbered houses, cascading flowers from window boxes, winding cobblestone streets and impressive town walls, Rothenburg, located in the Bavaria, region feels like a place where time has stood still. The village’s fairy tale charm is especially evident during the holiday season when it hosts one of Germany’s most famous Christmas markets.
Perched on a hill overlookingthe Tauber River, its name translates to “Rothenburg above the Tauber.”
Sintra, Portugal

Nestled amidst the lush vegetation of the Serra de Sintra hills just outside of Lisbon, the picturesque town immerses visitors in a fairy-tale like setting with narrow streets, quaint shops and cozy cafés.
Without a doubt, the crown jewel of Sitra is the Pena Palace, a vibrant and whimsical archeological masterpiece that could very well be the setting for a Disney movie. The UNESCO world heritage palace combines Gothic, Moorish and Renaissance styles and its turrets and lavish interiors are absolutely stunning.
Bled, Slovenia
Perched on the edge of a breathtaking emerald lake, this enchanting destination framed by the majestic Julian Alps offers a rare sense of warmth and tranquility. Glacial Lake Bled is known for its idyllic island that can be reached by traditional wooden boats called “pletna” operated by skilled oarsmen.
Don’t miss the hike up to medieval Bled Castle for its breathtaking views overlooking the town. Trust me, you’ll love this destination!
Brugge, Belgium
I remember the first time I visited Brugge. I was absolutely captivated by its medieval architecture, stone bridges, winding canals and cobbled streets of the village located just an hour from Brussels by train.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most well-preserved medieval towns in Europe and due to its canals, Brugge is often referred to as the “Venice of the North.” It’s a town best explored on foot to soak in its enchanting atmosphere and hidden gems.
Portree on the Island of Skye, Scotland
As she’s hanging on to her last breath of life after being poisoned, Tinker Bell tells Peter Pan that she can only be brought back to life if enough people believe in fairies. Peter then begs readers, “If you believe in fairies, then clap your hands,” and miraculously Tink is saved.
Disney hasn’t cornered the market on fairies. Scottish folklore is filled with myths and magical creatures but in Portree, it’s all about the magical fairies. Guests can visit Fairy Glen with its grassy mounds and strange stone circles or the Fairy Pools with their stunning waterfalls and crystalline waters. Though the landscapes including Dunvegan Castle are magnificent, the colorful village of Portree is your base to explore the magic of the Isle of Skye.
What is your favorite fairy tale town of Europe? We’d love to know as our travels haven’t yet taken us to them all!
