The renovation has included the restoration of the exterior and the historic façade, which is protected by Soprintendenza – the office for the Protection of Historic and Artistic assets, as well as the refurbishment of the rooms and top-of-the-range suites. 

Excellence and refinement are the guidelines that inspired the restyling project following the common thread of the 19th century Grand Tour that brought cultured travllers and lovers of beauty to this place. 

A great deal of care and attention to detail, even in the most hidden areas, has been paid to the rooms to make the most of their uniqueness, in a balance between antiquity and modernity, which come together in an inimitable style. Each suite is decorated with carefully restored antiques from the hotel’s collection. 

The rooms, all decorated in warm colors, have been renovated in accordance with Starhotels’ guidelines, using Made in Italy design features. The fabrics, carefully selected with the help of partners such as Rubelli, evoke the nuances of ancient Roman palaces.  

The inspiration of classic Italian beauty is evident in the décor of the top floor suites, where marble and stucco embellish and complete the rooms.

The rest is Rome in all its unabashed beauty: Pincio, Villa Borghese, the Altare della Patria and the Quirinale offer spectacular views from the windows of the attic suites, which, combined with the interiors, enhance the atmosphere of this beautiful Roman palace. 

The flagship of the new suites is the elegant Penthouse Suite, which consists of a large, bright living room with an original 19th-century yellow Sienese marble fireplace overlooking the dining room, study and master bedroom. The luxurious furnishings, the bas-reliefs by the famous Roman craftsman Felice Calchi, the handmade lamps by Vetrerie di Empoli adorn the elegant apartment. Italian velvets and fabrics designed by Dedar are used throughout the suite. 

Located on the top floor of the hotel, this unique suite has a magnificent 70-square-meter terrace with elegant outdoor furniture and a 360° panoramic view from the Villa Medici to the Vittorio Emanuele II monument. The terrace is the ideal place to relax, have an aperitif, enjoy a romantic dinner or organise a prestigious private event overlooking the rooftops of Rome.

Situated on the fifth floor, the new Balcony Suites combine refined simplicity with the hotel’s classic soul: the understated charm of black and white, echoed in geometric upholstery and decorations, plays with harmonious contrasts. The Roman spirit, evoked by the warm ochre, orange and red colors of the upholstery, is as always the protagonist. Stylish details in the lighting and fine trims blend perfectly with the color of the furniture. Each suite is adorned with Florentine Scagliola dining tables, each decorated in a unique and original way. 

Outside, the balconies are living spaces, real en plein air living rooms with upholstered wrought-iron furniture. From the rooftops, the light of the Eternal City floods the rooms, reflected in the mirrors that adorn the walls.

The latest works will be followed by the renovation of the remaining rooms and common areas at the end of 2023, with the addition of an intimate spa and a rooftop bar that will add to the charm of the Hotel d’Inghilterra, a hotel that has held a special place in the memories of its guests for centuries. 

The history of the Hotel d’Inghilterra 

The Hotel d’Inghilterra dates back to the middle of the 16th century, when it was used as a noble residence for the guests of Palazzo Torlonia, just opposite. As early as the 15th century, this area was renowned for having the best hotels in the city, attracting visitors from all over the world. In 1845, the residence for the guests of Palazzo Torlonia was converted into a hotel called the Hotel d’Angleterre, due to its popularity with British visitors. The hotel’s logo, inspired by the coat-of-arms of the British Royal Family, is a testament to the deep-seated, centuries-old link that the hotel has had with Britain and the Windsors. 

Among the hotel’s most illustrious guests were the romantic English poet John Keats, who spent the last years of his short life here, his fellow countrymen Byron and Shelley, and later Henry James, Elizabeth Taylor, Gregory Peck and Ernest Hemingway during the Dolce Vita years of the early 1900s.
