Do you love walking when you travel? If you’re like my family, you realize that exploring by foot allows you to see and experience much more than if you were on a chartered bus tour.
GuruWalk, the world’s largest platform for free walking tours, has shared a curated list of the most exciting cities around the world to explore on foot. Let’s look at the top 25, which all happen to be European.
A free tour or free walking tour is a guided historical, cultural or gastronomic walk led by a local and/or expert, where at the end of the experience, it is the traveler who decides how much to pay for the guides services.
These tours typically explore historic city centers, covering the essential highlights, but also include themed tours such as legend tours, architectural routes, or those focusing on major historical events like the World Wars.
Rome still holds the crown on the 2025 list, followed by Budapest and Madrid which climbs to 3rd, Prague and Barcelona forming a dominated top five that highlights a growing interest in walkable, culturally rich urban destinations.
